Register now: International Women’s Day: #EmbraceEquity

This #IWD2023 campaign theme is #EmbraceEquity. Equity means creating a fair and equal world. Equality is the goal, and equity is the means to get there. Each one of us can actively support and embrace equity within our own sphere of influence.

Get inspired by leading industry experts Mrs. Heli Tiirmaa-Klaar (Digital Society Institute) and Dr. Claudia Peersman (University of Bristol), who have helped break biases and demonstrated that women can be very successful in cybersecurity.

Mrs. Heli Tiirmaa-Klaar will address the topic “Achieving Cyber Stability: Successes and Challenges”

All stakeholders in the digital domain – governments, the private sector and academia have been working hard to achieve a more secure and trusted cyberspace over the past decades. There are some successes to report, but also many challenges to overcome. The forthcoming intervention will analyze the lessons learned that have contributed to the successes, and also describe the challenges remained, where all stakeholders have a role to play to build a more resilient cyber future.

Dr. Claudia Peersman will present her recent research:  “Towards a Human-centred Framework for Evaluating Online Child Protection Tools”

The continued growth in child sexual abuse material (CSAM), markedly during the COVID-19 pandemic, suggests that despite all efforts – technical and social – protecting children online remains a major challenge. Up until recently, assessing the performance of automated tools in this field has generally been based on criteria such as classification accuracy, false positive rates, and usability of the tools. Given the recent regulatory focus both in Europe and the UK on transparency and explainability in the use of AI-supported tools for online child protection, my recent work aims to contribute to the development of a framework for accommodating additional, human-centred, perspectives on evaluating such tools, such as their Human Rights impact, security, fairness, accountability, and disputability, and how these can be combined. Additionally, I will discuss the challenges that arise when evaluating industry tools for online child protection without potentially compromising their commercial interests.

We have invited representatives from various sectors for two panel discussions who will explain the solutions put in place in their own organizations to impact positive change.

  • A first panel – Women in Cyber: (Re)Skilling to empower – will focus on targeted skilling, reskilling, upskilling to accelerate gender diversity.
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion are three closely linked values held by many organizations that are working to be supportive of different groups of individuals. In a second panel discussion we will take a close look at the obstacles to achieving diversity and inclusion and how to overcome them: Women in Cyber: An economic imperative.

We will enjoy the hospitality of the Federal Public Service Economy, which will host the event at their premises in Brussels. There will be several networking opportunities with food and drinks.

Don’t miss this opportunity to gain useful insights and to expand your network.
